Musicians Action Group

MAG has been on the streets of the Bay Area since the 1980’s, accompanying chants of “no draft no war, US out of El Salvador” and pushing UC Berkeley out of People’s Park. As a group of mostly older white folks, we play traditional music of labor and civil rights movements around the world. Union Maid, Huelga, and Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika are just a few titles in the repertoire.

Nasty Woman Band

The Nasty Woman Band came together in 2017 to hit the streets for the Women’s March following the election. We chose music that was written by, made famous by, and/or addressed the plight of women in the world.

Music as History lesson…

Learning in my life often occurs through music. I came to understand the context of struggles at home and around the through song and melody. From the coal miners wife, from the communists, the strikers, the workers, the organizers, the students, we are able to hear history from diverse perspectives and cadences. And I used this as a path to the decolonial perspective, the anti-capitalist, anti white-supremacy, articulation of a world view. And the hope the folks around the world share for a more just society.
